The town of Rakiraki is a small town on the verge of facing significant growth and challenges. The town
provides a rural, small-town character and high quality of life sitting on the Sun Coast of Viti Levu
making it a very attractive location for residents and business alike, thereby increasing the opportunity
and challenges of long-term growth.
Fiji’s economic growth hovers around 4% in the last two years and the economy is expected to grow at
the same rate and slowly moving up in the coming years. The Suncoast region which includes Rakiraki
poses potential investment and economic activities that will not only harness Fiji’s economic growth but
more so for the region.
Rakiraki Town has a population of close to 2500 and it is anticipated that it will grow its population to
6000 by 2019
In undertaking this Strategic Planning project, the Town Council understood the need to carefully plan
for the growth and develop specific goals and objectives to direct the Town Councils decision making
and future actions to ensure that the quality of life and character of the Town is not lost in the process.

The council is responsible for the formulation and implementation of Rakiraki Town By-Laws and planning policies. To achieve this, the Council defines the core business and responsibilities as follows:
Corporate services
Implementation of policy decisions for the overall administration of the council’s budgeting, planning, financial and accounting control and managing human resources.
Local Government
Implementation and evaluation of the performance of council and stakeholders for good governance of economic activities. Acts and regulations implementation.

Manage, coordinate and monitor the economic empowerment of women in line with the UN Women Partner Improving Market project and UNDP PC Millennium Market objectives.

Partner with investment Fiji for profile marketing of Rakiraki to Local and overseas investors.
