SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT
Rakiraki Town Council is responsible to ensure that all waste discharged by residents and business houses are properly disposed at Naria Dumpsite. However, other issues like illegal dumping in front of the main gate are one of the greatest concerns which become a nuisance and health issues.
Garbage Collection
Town Boundary
The current collection system is designed to ensure efficient and timely removal of waste from the town to prevent accumulation of waste. Roadside collection requires residents to place their waste neatly along the roadside.
Receptacles used for disposing such waste are specified under the Rakiraki Town By-law 2011 and the Litter Act. Household wastes are solid waste generated from individual household and the Rakiraki Town Council has scheduled the collection of garbage on a weekly basis from Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Green wastes are organic matter that can be decomposed. Green waste collection is done on a monthly basis. Bulky waste collection is usually earmarked for white goods, electrical appliances, bulky waste etc. that is collected every 2 months by the council truck. Waste generated from or after a Disaster is also classified under this category whereby rubbish/disaster debris is cleared from residents’ compound and piled on roadside for council collection.
Extended Boundary
Collection System for Extended boundary are carried out two- three days on the last Week of each month and the collection schedule is announced two weeks in advance by way of notice to the village headman and advisory councilor or through hailer Speaker.
