Waste & Recycling
The Rakiraki Town Council has developed a Waste and Resource Management Plan (WRMP) to outline how we will achieve our waste management goals over the next five years, aiming for a balance between accessibility, affordability and sustainability. The WRMP supports:
The Council Long Term Approach to Waste Management- is that the council is looking for an alternative dumpsite. To-date the council is still managing waste being disposed to the dumpsite by upgrading.
As a Town we must think innovatively and in partnership with other local government authorities to develop long term waste management solutions.
It is no longer feasible to consider dumpsite as the long term solution to managing general waste. As our population continues to grow, the council must consider alternatives for upgrading the dumpsite to cater for the waste being generated.
In partnership with the JICA, all Municipal councils in Fiji have been working together to help the Council significantly reduce its reliance on waste disposal; making a step change towards achieving its zero waste objectives.
How the Council is helping you manage your Green waste.
The Rakiraki Town Council has a number of initiatives and services available to residents to manage the disposal and recycling of green waste.
Such initiative includes:
Green waste collection: Each year the Council offers residents green waste collections. These
Collections enable the council to gather and provide a cleaner, better quality of raw product for mulching, avoiding the potential of contaminated or poor quality green waste being placed in Rate Payers compound.
The Health Department shall perform its duties to protect the environment and to improve health and sanitary status within the Rakiraki Urban District and shall perform its powers through enforcing of relevant laws and legislation. Below is the list of responsibilities carried out by Health Inspector.
